Streetwise Sport Youth Day Soccer Event

Youth Day in South Africa is in memory of the The Soweto Uprising, also known as June 16,  a series of protests led by high school students in South Africa  that began on the morning of 16 June 1976. Students from numerous Sowetan schools began to protest in the streets of  Soweto in response to the introduction of  Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. An estimated 20,000 students took part in the protests. The number of people who died is usually given as 176, with estimates of up to 700. June 16 is now a public holiday, in South Africa, in remembrance of the events of 1976.

Fast forward to 2013, and the youth that we work with at Streetwise Sport face so many different challenges in the form of homelessness, unemployment, substance abuse and hopelessness.

All problems were set aside on the day of our league ending final day of street soccer at the Grand Parade in Cape Town. Well done to all our teams and players for the effort given on the day. Well done to the victorious Bo - Kaap team who won the final to take the cup. See u guys next season!

Today we were on Grand Parade, down town, for our weekly soccer mini-tournament with some kids from Bo Kaap. Kids and young adults came from all over the town to play with us there, like every sunday afternoon. Today we announces The player of the month; one among the kids and one among the young adults. They were chosen because they were the most diciplined ones, and because they showed alot of teamspirit! We have had an amazing day today!
